We are El hogar de luci, an animal sanctuary-school based in Madrid, a place that is free from exploitation and cruelty to all animals. Somewhere where harmony and respect reign in the middle of the barbarity of the modern world. We are the first vegan sanctuary in Spain and now we are experiencing serious problems.
Initially, we dedicated our work exclusively to the rescue and rehabilitation of abused domestic animals. But, unfortunately, the lack of volunteers and economic funds are forcing us to rapidly develop an International department so that we can reach out to our “elder siblings” in other countries, asking for help, advice, economic support and volunteers…whatever you can contribute, we will be deeply grateful.
We were new to the ambitious and noble project of rescuing animals and spreading the word about animal equality and veganism, but now that we have gained some experience we still find ourselves facing another big problem: the lack of funding and volunteers in Spain. Spain is deeply set in its ways and can be a cruel place. Many other non-profit organizations are advertising animals for adoption in other European countries. Remember that old habits die hard. We are still fighting against public demonstrations of cruelty and slaughter, such as the bullfights and many other unpleasant customs that are allowed to continue in too many places: chasing a bull across the town and killing it with lances; throwing a goat from the top of a church tower; setting the horns of cows and bulls on fire; cockfighting… sadly I could keep going for the rest of the day. There are few limits to what people will do in the name of “tradition and national identity”, but all we can see is the killing and torturing of animals. Yet there are no legal boundaries.
You can imagine how hard it is for us to explain that we consider all animals to be equals and that they all have the right to life, dignity and freedom.
We currently care for a wide variety of animals: pigs, hens, chickens, cocks, pigeons, dogs, cats, rabbits, goats and sheep, yet if we continue to face such a lack of resources, we might be force to give them away.
We don’t want our goat Jana to be exploited for her milk, or our pig Brandon to become ham, our hen Rita to be exploited for her eggs or meat, or our dear dog Victor to die in a kennel because no one got there on time. Now that we have explained our desire to raise awareness through peaceful activism, we in Madrid ask for help of the other caring and animal loving people in Europe. We need your knowledge, aid and experience to enable us to keep going.
